WASTEWATER LEAK - PROSSER STREET, TITAHI BAY
Wellington Water crews responding to a wastewater leak on Prosser Street, Titahi Bay

Our team have responded to a wastewater leak at the corner of Prosser Street and Titahi Bay Road.

Excavation is currently underway. The pump station is operating but will need to be shutdown before repair. Plans to divert the wastewater flow away from the pipe is being developed as the pipe will also need to be shutdown before repair.

There has been an earlier discharge into the stormwater network. This has now stopped with sucker trucks managing the flow, preventing wastewater entering the stormwater network. Signage has been placed at the outlets into the harbour and water quality sampling will be underway.

Traffic management has been set up on Titahi Bay Road. One southbound lane has been closed.

Works commenced at Cockayne Road and Imlay Crescent on Monday 12 January, with our contractors G P Friel Ltd excavating each end of the pipe to prepare it for cleaning.

A critical drinking water pipe running between Cockayne Road and Imlay Crescent was taken out of service following a burst in June 2024.

Since then, water has been supplied to the northern part of Ngaio via the Mount Kaukau Reservoir. This is a temporary solution which is not sustainable for the network, especially during summer months.

We are planning to repair the current pipe and re-line it with Cured In-Place Pipe Lining (CIPP) — a modern, low-impact method that lets us strengthen the pipe from the inside without digging it up.

15/01/26 Works underway at Cockayne Road and Imlay Cresent

Works commenced at Cockayne Road and Imlay Crescent  on Monday 12 January, with our contractors G P Friel Ltd excavating each end of the pipe to prepare it for cleaning. Letters have been distributed to Cockayne Road and Imlay Crescent households regarding the works and traffic management, which will be in place for about two weeks.

Following the repair of the pipe we will pause works while we await delivery of the lining material, before the re-lining and curing process takes place from February to the end of April.

06/01/26 Works beginning at Cockayne Road and Imlay Crescent

Wellington Water, on behalf of Wellington City Council, is renewing the drinking water pipe between Cockayne Road and Imlay Crescent which failed in June 2024. This pipe is a critical piece of the network which provides the water supply for northern Ngaio.

The first stage of this project will begin on Monday 12 January, and take about two weeks.

For safety and to provide access for trucks and equipment, a section of Cockayne Road will be reduced to one lane, with a temporary 30km/h speed limit and stop-go system in place. Cars, buses, cyclists and pedestrians will be guided by traffic controllers past the work site.

The end of Imlay Crescent will be closed to vehicles (except for those belonging to residents) and no roadside parking will be available.

As the pipe is currently not in use, there will be no disruption to water services in the area due to these works.

  • There will be some noise and vibration created by the works.

  • Working hours will be 7am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Noisy plant and machinery will only be used after 7:30am.

We understand this work could be disruptive and appreciate your understanding as we carry out this essential work. This project will support a reliable and resilient drinking water supply for the northern parts of Ngaio.
