Why water conservation matters in Wellington
Every drop of water counts, so we need to keep our eye on our water use. We need to be careful and efficient with our water use and help protect our environment and this precious resource.
Wellington’s daily water supply is limited. We can only take so much from the rivers and aquifers, treatment plants can only supply so much, and there is a limit to how much water we can store.
Building new lakes and storage facilities is expensive and heavily impacts the environment, that’s why we need to carefully manage demand and water loss on the public and private water networks – everyone in Wellington has a part to play.

What about leaks?
Wellington's water supply is collected from rivers and the Waiwhetu aquifer before being treated (made clean to drink). It doesn't matter how much it rains as we can only collect and store so much. Our region's winter daily demand four years ago was about 150 million liters per day.
